Description

The mourning woman is the emblem of Termignon. This war memorial, a woman in period costume holding her face, symbolizes every mother who waits in vain for the return of her children, gone to defend the country. It is the work of the sculptor Lucien Jaggi. The war memorial, depicting a woman in traditional dress holding her face, is one of the very few in France to represent a woman. The project originated with the desire of Great War survivors from Termignon to break with tradition. Médard Floret proposed a woman in local costume, weeping and holding her face, and he managed to convince the mayor at the time, Léon Martyn, and the town council. The project was entrusted to the renowned Geneva sculptor Luc Jaggi, whose mother was from Termignon. Inaugurated on April 26, 1931, the mourning woman was intended above all as a monument to peace.
